Full Report: Susquehanna County: Many anglers are anticipating the Bass opener this Saturday. With the recent change in regulations, anglers will be able to take full advantage of “umbrella rigs”. Previous regulations only allowed three hooks and the new regulation allows unlimited hooks. This will be interesting to see if anglers observe increased catch rates.

It should be noted that unlimited hooks does not mean trot lines can be left in the water. All fishing devices need to be attended at all times, with the exception of turtle hooks and bait traps that need to be tagged.

Full Report: Blair County: Canoe Lake still has good ice for anglers who want to continue their ice fishing adventures this winter. Lukas Diehl, caught and released what very well could have been the new state record chain pickerel last week. The fish was weighed on an unofficial scale he had with him while on the ice. It weighed 9 lbs. and was 33 inches long. This would have beat the current state record that stands at 8 lbs., 14 oz. Lukas is an avid fisherman and always practices catch and release; however, after releasing it he went home to research the state record list and realized he might have released the new record.

Full Report: Blair County: Canoe Lake was stocked through the ice with 2400 trout on Monday, February 11th. The trout continue to bite despite the decreased activity in catching other species. Because the lake is still at a 7 foot draw down, it appears that the fish are spooky and not as many are being caught lately.

Anglers are reminded that Canoe Lake had a status change which removed it from the "Late Winter Trout Stocked Lake" program to "Approved Trout Waters Open to Year Round Fishing". This means that anglers can fish the lake every day of the year, however, No trout may be taken from March 1st, to the Opening Day of Trout season on April 13th at 8 am.

Full Report: Blair County: Due to lack of recent rainfall, local rivers and streams are very low making it difficult to fish or boat on these waterways. Canoe Lake is still providing excellent fishing opportunities. With the cooling water temperatures, anglers are starting to catch trout. Bass and panfish also continue to be active. Anglers are reminded that we are now in the Extended Trout Season and only three trout can be kept per day.

Canoe Lake will be stocked with trout on Monday, Oct. 1 as well as the Little Juniata River Delayed Harvest Section where it is Catch and Release only this time of year

Anglers and boaters should also be aware that Canoe Lake will be drawn down five feet over the winter so DCNR can conduct some repairs and additional construction activities. This should not affect the Feb stocking. The lake will begin its draw down on Tuesday, Oct 2. Anglers and boaters are still permitted to fish and boat at the facility.

Full Report: Blair County: With river and stream levels depleting due to lack of rainfall, most are very difficult to fish. I had great success this past week fishing for smallmouth bass on Standing Stone Creek using crayfish as bait. Several bass over 15" were caught and released. The water was very clear so I was very careful on my approach to the deeper holes I wanted to fish. I did see some trout swimming in areas with cooler water.

Full Report: Blair County: The 2012 trout-stocking season is coming to and end and anglers should be very pleased with the numbers and size of the trout stocked in the County. The Pleasant Gap State Fish Hatchery produced a very healthy and nice sized fish again this year.

It appears that lack of ice on Canoe Lake saved a great number of fish from the "would be" creels of ice anglers this past winter. Fishing has been excellent all spring and anglers are catching walleye, musky, crappie, trout, and some very nice bass.

Full Report: Blair County: With the increasing water temperatures, crappie are really hitting at Canoe Lake.

Two anglers caught 87 in one outing, many of them in the 14-16 inch range. Another angler had a very large musky take his trout, which he was reeling in. It spit the trout out just before getting to shore.

Canoe Lake will be closed to all fishing from April 1-14th when it will be open for the first day of trout!

Full Report: Blair County: Canoe Lake was stocked with 2400 Rainbow Trout on February 13, 2012. There was no ice on the lake making creating excellent bank and boat fishing opportunities. Many anglers are catching the hardy trout using power bait and silver lures such as "the nitti".

Local rivers are also ice free offering some very nice kayak and canoe opportunities. Boaters should still be aware that water temperatures are still in the 40's and 50's so wear a life jacket in case you are emerged in the water.

Trout stocking is upon us and I will begin by preseason stocking on Friday, march 2nd at the Beaver Dam Creek and Frankstown Branch.

Full Report: Blair County: There is approximately 3-4 inches of ice on Canoe Lake and a few anglers were out on it. This is borderline ice thickness for humans to walk on. Anglers should always use extra precaution when venturing out on the ice. The middle of the lake is most likely not thick enough to hold and angler. Anglers should always wear some sort of a life jacket and ice awls around their neck in case they break through the ice.

Full Report: Blair County: With the change of the weather, fishing and boating activity has decreased in the area but there are still some anglers taking advantage of the warmer days. Anglers are catching Trout and Smallmouth Bass on the Frankstown Branch near Water Street using artificial lures and plugs. Canoe Lake still offers plenty of fishing and boating opportunities.
